Many consider agile a process to implement within an existing organization. A set of rules to follow that will produce some useful outcomes. This approach can provide improvements in many different structures of organizations. As agile maturity improves, however, the benefits can become limited by the structure and culture of the organization itself. Agile is more than a framework for organizing tasks for a team. Agile is a culture, a mindset and a structure for improving the velocity of innovation and providing real business value to customers. To gain the most benefit from Agile it must be considered as part of a more extensive system that incorporates organizational structure, software architecture, and company culture. This talk considers the interactions between how the work, the software, and the people are organized in high performing agile organizations. Using my own experiences at companies large and small, I will share what I have learned and some best practices I use. These lessons will help you as you improve and scale your Agile teams. I will discuss: How to structure your organization to remove the bottlenecks in coordination and decision-making that can slow velocity to a crawl How to take advantage of modern systems architectures to allow teams to move faster Using data to provide accountability for autonomous teams without creating more process By the end, you will have concrete examples and ideas that you can bring back to your team to help you improve and scale agile within your organization.

“Shifting left” is all about baking-in quality instead of sprinkling it on top after the feature is built. It’s about investing more in defects prevention and less in detection. But it raises many questions: Does “Shift-left” mean “No QA”? If you have full coverage of Automated End-to-End System Tests, do you still need Automated Unit Tests? Can a developer really test his own code? Should DevOps still be a role on the team? Do we need to raise the bar on the level of details of User Stories the Product Owner hands over to the team? In this talk we will discuss these and other questions that come up as teams are shifting left. Those questions came up as AT&T Israel transitioned to a shift-left approach, and they uncover some misconceptions on what this shift really means, and how to implement it in practice. Those misconceptions get in the way and can derail such a transition if not addressed in time. Here we will spell out those misconceptions and propose alternatives. The alternatives are not necessarily easy as they often represent a major shift in our assumptions, and require hard work to turn them into a reality, so you are left with a choice between the hard and the deadly.

The move to the cloud is changing how we innovate, and today’s “B2B” is tomorrow’s “B2C”. Intuit, a 35 year old company, is well known globally for cracking the code on internal innovation. As a company which manages to keep reinventing itself, it uses innovation methodologies resembling “Lean Startup” and Design-Driven Innovation. In this session, Baat Enosh, Director of Strategy & Innovation, will share some of Intuit’s methodologies and culture, with particular focus on the importance of deep customer empathy, and a method called “Follow Me Home”. This session is particularly important for back-end, devOps, and those in B2B, who until today didn’t interact much with their customers.

Machine learning has become an important tool in the modern software toolbox, and high-performing organizations are increasingly coming to rely on data science and machine learning as a core part of their business. eBay introduced machine learning to its commerce search ranking and drove double-digit increases in revenue. Stitch Fix built a multibillion dollar clothing retail business in the US by combining the best of machines with the best of humans. And WeWork is bringing machine-learned approaches to the physical office environment all around the world. In all cases, algorithmic techniques started simple and slowly became more sophisticated over time. This keynote will use these examples to derive an agile approach to machine learning, and will explore that approach across several different dimensions. We will set the stage by outlining the kinds of problems that are most amenable to machine-learned approaches as well as describing some important prerequisites, including investments in data quality, a robust data pipeline, and experimental discipline. Next, we will choose the right (algorithmic) tool for the right job, and suggest how to incrementally evolve the algorithmic approaches we bring to bear. Most fancy cutting-edge recommender systems in the real world, for example, started out with simple rules-based techniques or basic regression. Finally, we will integrate machine learning into the broader product development process, and see how it can help us to accelerate business results.
